A modest amount of 4895 is the no-brainer powder. I found that 150 grain bullets shot significantly more accurate than 180's etc. Could easily stay under 2MOA with handloads (for a Krag this is prett dang good, esp. My "fake" Krag Carbine was an excellent shooter (the Red Colored Group in center of picture).

give your buddy 30 bucks per box and everybody is happy. At 40+ bucks per box for store-bought, this may be another good option. maybe you have someone you know and trust who is a EXPERIENCED reloader who can make you up a couple boxes. Both are 180s around 2350fps.īrass is easy to find, however, and reloading as indicated above is the way to go these days. Most likely candidates are Remington Core-Lokt and Winchester Super X.

If you find ANY commercial factory-made US ammo, it will be safe to shoot. I will have my gunsmith check the head spacing prior to shooting.
SPRINGFIELD 1898 AMMO SERIAL NUMBER
From the serial number and stock cartouche it was produced in 1901. I was not sure if a modern load would work or if I would have to look for a black powder load for this rifle.
